Organic spirulina: how to blend it without overpowering flavour

Espirulina Ecológica en Polvo Pamir Gold – 150 g

Spirulina's deep green colour is striking, but its earthy flavour is part of the recipe too. Begin with a small amount and mix thoroughly. A bowl does not need to turn completely green to become a combination you enjoy.

Start small

For an initial cooking experiment, try around 0.5 g of powder in a serving of yoghurt and adjust to taste. This is a flavour guideline, not a nutritional recommendation or daily dose. Follow the pack instructions and use suitable scales if measuring such small amounts.

Teaspoon weights vary with size and how tightly the powder is packed, so avoid assuming that a spoonful suits every recipe.

Pear and spirulina yoghurt bowl

For one serving: 150–170 g plain yoghurt or an unsweetened plant-based alternative, half a ripe pear, a small amount of spirulina, one teaspoon lemon juice and an optional tablespoon of rolled oats.

  1. Put one tablespoon of yoghurt in a small bowl.
  2. Mix the spirulina into it until smooth, adding a few drops of water if needed.
  3. Stir into the remaining yoghurt and taste.
  4. Add diced pear, lemon juice and oats. Serve immediately.

Ripe fruit provides sweetness without sweetening the base. Swap pear for mango or banana if you prefer. Check the yoghurt, plant-based alternatives and oats for allergens where relevant.

Adjust flavour and texture

If the earthy taste is too strong, add more yoghurt or fruit rather than more powder. For lumps, work a small portion with a spoon or whisk before mixing it back in. For a drinkable smoothie, start with a little liquid and add the remainder after the powder is fully blended.

Spirulina should not be treated as a reliable source of active vitamin B12. If you want to meet a nutritional need, do not infer this from an ingredient's colour or name: consult the label and appropriate advice.

Keep a versatile pantry ingredient

Pamir Gold organic spirulina powder comes in a 150 g pouch. Use it for breakfast bowls or try small quantities in a gentle dressing. Keep the pouch tightly closed, protected from light and moisture, and use a clean, dry spoon.
