Himalayan black salt (Kala Namak) offers a distinctive finishing touch for toast. Its sulphurous aroma recalls egg and pairs well with gentle ingredients such as avocado and chickpeas. Start with a small pinch and taste before adding more.
Understand the ingredient
Himalayan black salt (Kala Namak) is different from ordinary pink salt. Its interest here lies in its flavour and aroma. It is a mineral salt, not an agricultural organic product, even when displayed alongside Pamir Gold pantry ingredients. It also does not make a plant-based dish nutritionally equivalent to egg.
If the crystals are coarse, grind just what you need in a mortar or a salt-compatible mill. Finer grains distribute more evenly in spreads and dressings, helping you avoid an overly salty mouthful.
Avocado and chickpea toast
For two slices: two slices of bread, one small avocado, 80 g cooked and drained chickpeas, one teaspoon lemon juice, one teaspoon olive oil, pepper and a pinch of Himalayan black salt (Kala Namak).
- Toast the bread to your liking.
- Mash the chickpeas with a fork and mix with the avocado, lemon and oil, leaving some texture.
- Spread over the toast and add pepper.
- Finish with a small pinch of ground black salt, taste and adjust only if needed.
Allow roughly ten minutes. If your canned chickpeas contain salt, taste the mixture before seasoning. Add tomato, radishes or chives if you like. Bread may contain gluten; check the other ingredients too if avoiding allergens.
Why finish with it?
Adding the salt just before serving helps you appreciate its aroma and control the amount. For a warm dish, try adding it off the heat. There is no need to add another salt automatically: taste the whole dish first.
Choose a pack for your pantry
The Pamir Gold 150 g pouch lets you portion small amounts for toast, tofu, salads and sauces. Check the product page for ingredients and availability. Keep the pouch sealed, away from steam, and use a dry spoon. Like other salts, it contributes sodium and should be used moderately.
